Hi Nerylan, always play it safe, best to use either a male or female condom. I think what you might be referring to is part of "Natural Family Planning" read the wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_Method
Usually a week before or after/during your period is considered safe. Another very helpful resource is the free site YourDays go to link http://www.yourdays.com/ Register for free and it gives you an online application with which you can check your free ovulation calendar and get your personal fertility chart so you can avoid an unwanted pregnancy with natural methods.
