Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found that cases of cutaneous melanoma diagnoses skyrocketed among young women from 5.4 cases in 1970 to 43.5 cases in 2009 per 100,000 residents. However, more cases were discovered in the early stages and fewer deaths were reported.
Researchers attribute the rise in cancer rates to tanning beds and the fall in deaths to increased awareness of skin cancer.
