A study published in the British medical journal, The Lancet, found that medical issues caused by a sedentary lifestyle kill about 5.3 million deaths per year worldwide, or one in 10 deaths worldwide caused by diseases strongly linked to inactivity such as breast and colon cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
Researchers found that people in higher-income countries were among the least active and that the death rates from inactivity are high enough for the problem to warrant pandemic status.
