Supermarket Survival

It's been estimated that 47% of all food purchases are made on impulse! The following tips should help make your trip to the supermarket more successful:

  1. Attach a sheet of paper with a magnet or tape to the refrigerator

and keep an ongoing list of supplies needed. Enlist your family's help.

  2. Study grocery store layout and make your list accordingly.

  3. Shop only once or twice a week.

  4. Think of menu planning and supermarket shopping as a hobby, not a chore.

  5. Locate a fresh produce stand or farmer's market to buy fresh

fruits and vegetables. Can or freeze seasonal foods for use all year

    long.

  6. Beware of products labeled "diet" or "natural"; some imitation

products may not be significantly lower in fat or calories. Read and

compare labels to determine nutritional value and fat content.

  7. Ask a family member or friend to shop with you or for you.

  8. Shop at a time of day when you're not hungry and/or subject to temptation.

  9. Stick to your shopping list unless you find a bargain on an item that's important to your diet.

  10. Avoid taking your children to the store. They may tempt you to buy treats.

  11. If you must buy snacks, purchase them in small or individual packages. If you are tempted, you won't consume an entire box.

  12. Have someone else put groceries away.
