It's been estimated that 47% of all food purchases are made on
impulse! The following tips should help make your trip to the
supermarket more successful:
- Attach a sheet of paper with a magnet or tape to the
refrigerator
and keep an ongoing list of supplies needed. Enlist your
family's help.
- Study grocery store layout and make your list
accordingly.
- Shop only once or twice a week.
- Think of menu planning and supermarket shopping as a
hobby, not a chore.
- Locate a fresh produce stand or farmer's market to buy
fresh
fruits and vegetables. Can or freeze seasonal foods for
use all year
long.
- Beware of products labeled "diet" or "natural"; some
imitation
products may not be significantly lower in fat or
calories. Read and
compare labels to determine nutritional value and fat
content.
- Ask a family member or friend to shop with you or for
you.
- Shop at a time of day when you're not hungry and/or
subject to temptation.
- Stick to your shopping list unless you find a bargain
on an item that's important to your diet.
- Avoid taking your children to the store. They may tempt
you to buy treats.
- If you must buy snacks, purchase them in small or
individual packages. If you are tempted, you won't consume
an entire box.
- Have someone else put groceries away.
