Surgeons have long believed that repairing tears in older people's anterior cruciate ligaments (ACLs) wasn't worthwhile because these patients' athletic days had passed. But a small new study suggests that older adults who suffer ACL tears in their knees recover as well from surgical repair of these injuries as younger people. Scientists say repairing these injuries may help people to remain active in sports throughout their lives.
