Even short-term use of vitamin D and calcium supplements can
greatly reduce the risk of stress fractures in women. A study of
5,200 female U.S. Navy recruits showed that those who did not take
daily doses of the two supplements suffered 25-percent more stress
fractures than those who did take the supplements.
