Smart Choices food labeling halted after FDA warning

An industry-funded food labeling program known as Smart Choices has been suspended just days after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it would investigate if the labels were misleading about foods' nutritional content. Consumer groups have complained that the Smart Choices checkmark logo--which marks a food as healthy--is being placed on the front of the packages of foods that have high sugar or salt content. The Smart Choices Program said it would voluntarily postpone operations and not encourage new or wider use of the logo. Participating companies include Kellogg, Kraft, and General Mills.
