The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings to 17 companies over health claims the companies have made about their foods on packages and Web sites. For example, the FDA warned Diamond Foods over claims it made about its California Shelled Walnuts, claims that touted the omega-3 fatty acid content of the nuts as being protective against stroke, cancer, and depression. The FDA says such claims are only reserved for drugs and thus cannot be used on the company's Web site. Other companies affected by the warnings include Nestle's Gerber unit and POM Wonderful. The warnings are part of growing effort government effort to ensure that consumers have reliable information about the foods they eat.
