Nurses Don't Like It Either

Posting Date: 03/01/1999

Sue: I?m a nurse with two sons, 12 and almost 18, and I?ve assisted with hundreds of circumcisions. Once I watched the procedure, I swore I?d never do it to my children.

Dean: In medical school, the low person on the totem pole gets to go in and see the babies lined up. I remember in horror being told to circumcise these infants, but I was a student and did it. I didn?t like it though.

Sue: The majority of nurses I know hate to participate in circumcisions. And when it?s done, they rarely use any kind of anesthesia or painkiller.

Dr. Dean: Statistically, the majority of circumcisions are done without anesthesia. I?d call this cruel and unusual punishment and I believe it affects the way they approach getting early vaccinations. There?s a fear that?s instilled. It?s a psychological effect.
