E-mail comment: Hi. I'm a dog owner. You can stop the problem by putting meat tenderizer on dog food. It changes the taste and stops the problem. It worked for us.

Dr. Dean: You learn something every day.

Second E-mail comment: I've heard that many flavorings used in dog food are not completely digested as they pass through the GI tract. After they are excreted, they still smell good to dogs the second time around.

I'm confident this is correct. I wish I knew the answer to a less disgusting question.

Dr. Dean: That makes sense. You could feed the dog plain old meat and if that stops the habit, the question is answered.
