I'm 19. Will Ginkgo Fix My Poor Memory?

Posting Date: 04/04/2000

E-mail question: I'm a 19 year old male with extremely poor short-term memory. I have many epiphanies, but I forget them before I can even say what they are.

I want to take ginkgo, but my coworker listens to your show and she says I should be careful with ginkgo.

Dr. Dean: Ginkgo is dangerous if it's taken with any kind of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or with aspirin -- it can cause a brain hemorrhage. Besides, it's a waste of money, because it's not going to help your memory.

You're 19. Relax. There is nothing wrong with your short-term memory, except for your own self-judgment. Unless you are taking drugs or have a strange illness, at 19 you don't have an abnormal memory.

Most people who think they have memory problems seem to have a distorted view of what memory should be.
