INTRODUCTION

What does "bacteria" have to do with "beauty"? Quite a bit, as it turns out. Dermatologists say they can erase wrinkles and take years off your face with a bacteria they call botox.

DEAN EDELL, M.D.

"Shari Shryock feels young."

SHARI SHRYOCK/BOTOX PATIENT

"I exercise at least five days a week; I make sure I get as much sleep as possible."

DEAN EDELL, M.D.

"She wants her face to reflect the way she feels, so the 49-year-old personal trainer has decided to have botox injections to diminish lines around her forehead and eyes.

"In its undiluted form, botulism toxin is produced by a germ found in improperly canned food. And one thimble full of pure toxin could kill the entire human race.

"It paralyzes muscles, including the breathing muscles. But doctors inject a very dilute solution to paralyze overactive muscles."

SETH MATARASSO, M.D./DERMATOLOGIST

"In very small, dilute amounts, we can inject it into select areas in the face and get rid of wrinkles."

DEAN EDELL, M.D.

"Botox is injected into the frown and squint muscles in the upper-third of the face that cause furrows and creasing."

SETH MATARASSO, M.D.

"It truly is a remarkable improvement in facial wrinkles. You can see the crow's feet will really disappear. That deep line in between your eyebrows can be dramatically, dramatically softened."

DEAN EDELL, M.D.

"There is no significant incidence of allergy to botox, and side effects are rare, but could include a droopy eyelid if an injection is misplaced."

SHARI SHRYOCK

"People think you've slept, vacationed, changed your makeup, did something really great for yourself, and you did!"

DEAN EDELL, M.D.

"The wrinkle-free effects of botox usually last from 3 to 4 months before gradually wearing off, and the series of injections can be repeated."

END NOTE

The cost of botox can range from two to five hundred dollars per area treated, and is not covered under most insurance plans. In addition to wrinkle-fighting, botox is also being used to treat migraine headaches and to stop excessive sweating.
