Will Peyronie's Disease Go Away?

Posting Date: 06/01/2000

Gerald: Nine months ago I was diagnosed with Peyronie's disease. Will it get any worse? What should I do?

Dr. Dean: Peyronie's disease is characterized by a curvature of the penis. It sometimes gets better on its own, but it can also stay the same, or get worse. During the first year that someone has Peyronie's, we usually just monitor it to see how it develops.

If the curvature isn't painful and if it doesn't prevent intercourse, then treatment isn't necessary.

Some men get relief with a medication called verapamil. Surgery is also an option, and the results are often positive. Talk to a urologist who has experience treating Peyronie's disease.
