Surgery Not Necessary For Non-Retractable Foreskin

Posting Date: 08/14/2000

I?m glad to report there are alternatives to surgery for young boys who have a non-retractable foreskin.

In many cases, the condition, known as phimosis, will clear itself up, but you can also use a safe and economical topical steroid to successfully treat the abnormality.

Researchers say 90 percent of 137 boys treated daily with betamethasone were able to easily retract their foreskin after the trial period, according to a report in Urology.

All the boys in this research by the Harvard Medical School and colleagues in Spain were between 13 months to 14 years old and their age made no difference to the successful outcome of being treated with .05 percent of the cream twice daily for one month.

Putting on a cream and gently working the foreskin back each day is certainly better than undergoing the trauma of surgery and I hope parents opt for this new pediatric treatment for phimosis.
