Try Testosterone When You're Over The Hill

Posting Date: 12/18/2000

Some doctors have been clamoring for recognition that men have menopause. So if men do have menopause, should they be given testosterone, since many women who go through menopause are given female hormones?

Scientists tested the effects of testosterone injections in a double-blind study of healthy men above age 65. Every two weeks for four weeks, the men received intramuscular injections of 200 milligrams of testosterone or a placebo. Before the series of injections began, and twice when it was over, the men took standard psychology tests to measure their sense of well being.

The men did not report feeling any better or any younger. The injections resulted in no HRQOL differences, which is lingo for health-related quality of life, between men who received either testosterone injections or placebo injections. "The PGWB (Psychological General Well-Being ) scores at baseline, on treatment and off treatment were not significantly different between the two groups."

A lot of you men are already out there getting testosterone from these clinics in the belief that it will give you the get-up-and-go you had at 16. If you are one of the masses searching for the fountain of youth, this isn't it.
