As Lethal As The Hydrogen Bomb?

Posting Date: 10/08/2001

  • The only known accidental release of aerosolized anthrax spores occurred in 1979 in Sverdolovsk in the former Soviet Union. There were 79 cases of anthrax infection with a total of 68 deaths. There cases occurred from 2 to 43 days after exposure.

  • There is no data that suggests the people?to-people transmission of anthrax occurs.

  • The greatest risk to human health following an intentional spraying of anthrax spores occurs during the period in which anthrax spores remain airborne. The duration of the anthrax spill and distance it travels will be due to meteorological conditions. The maximum survival and persistence of the aerosol could be hours to one day.

  • The vaccine is an inactivated cell-free product that is designed to be given in a six-dose series. There have been no human trials on the anthrax vaccine. A monkey experiment with this vaccine at 0 and 2 weeks was completely protective against the aerosolized form of anthrax. A human, live attenuated vaccine is used and produced in many countries of the Soviet Union.

  • Most experts agree that the manufacture of aerosolized anthrax is ?beyond the capacity of individuals or groups without access to advanced biotechnology.? Although, it is not beyond the capacity of a group with substantial funds that could find and purchase the materials and manpower to manufacture and spray aerosolized anthrax.

These are brief highlights from this paper. Hopefully, they will give you a greater understanding of aerosolized anthrax and what we may be dealing with in Florida.
