One of the problems with effectively treating nail fungus is the thick toenail for instance protects the fungus underneath from being reached by any topical medication. According to research presented at the American Academy of Dermatology pretreating the nail with 40% urea gel softened the nail and allowed the antifungal medication ciclopirox to penetrate and kill the fungus. The combination of 40% urea gel and 8% cicolpirox lacquer was 100% effective in killing all fungus. This is an early study but seems to be more effective for this stubborn condition.
