Aerobic Exercise Good For Moms-To-Be

Posting Date: 01/07/1999

All these years we have been telling women not to exercise too much when pregnant, and it turns out that exercise might prevent spontaneous abortion.

Researchers at Columbia University School of Public Health report in the January issue of Epidemiology that aerobic exercise protects against spontaneous abortion. Other forms of physical activity do not have the same effects.

The researchers interviewed 344 women with a history of spontaneous abortion. Those who exercised regularly had a lower risk of spontaneous abortion of a normal fetus, with an odds ratio of 0.6. Researchers speculate that exercise may lessen the hormonal fluctuations that may cause uterine contractions and abortion.
