Maternal alcohol consumption during pregnancy and maternal use of the antiseizure medicines -- valproic acid and phenytoin (depakote and dilantin) -- during pregnancy have been associated with increased incidence of VSDs. Other than avoiding these, there is no known way to prevent a VSD.
