Symptoms:

  • sore throat
  • croup
  • wheezing
  • bronchiolitis
  • bronchitis
  • shortness of breath
  • chest pain

Signs and tests:
  • sinus tenderness
  • red throat
  • swollen glands at neck
  • crackles or wheezing in lungs
  • fever
Tests:
  • swab of nose for rapid viral test
  • viral culture (very expensive; cultures generally are not performed for reasons other than to determine the nature of an epidemic)
  • CBC
  • arterial blood gases
