Nasal mucosal biopsy

Definition:

A nasal mucosal biopsy is surgery in which a small piece of tissue is removed from the lining of the nose and checked for disease.

How the test is performed:

Apain-killer is sprayed into the nose. In some cases, a numbingshotmay be used. A small piece of the tissue that appears abnormal is removed and checked for problems in the laboratory.


How to prepare for the test:


No special preparation is necessary. You may be asked to fastfor a few hours before the biopsy.


How the test will feel:

There may feelings of pressure or tugging during removal of the tissue. After thenumbness wears off, the area may be sore for a few days. If there is bleeding, cautery (sealing of blood vessels with electric current or laser) may be needed.


Why the test is performed:

Nasal mucosal biopsy is usually done when abnormal tissue isseen during examination of the nose. It may also be done whenproblems affecting the mucosal tissue of the noseare suspected.
