Indications

Thyroidectomy may be recommended for:

  • increased thyroid function (hyperthyroidism; thyrotoxicosis)
  • decreased thyroid function (hypothyroidism) with enlargement(hypertrophy) of the gland
  • primary cancer of the thyroid
  • enlargement of the thyroid (nontoxic goiter)
