Intimacy and Impotency After Surgery for Prostate Cancer

By steveconlan Saturday, January 17, 2009

My wife and I are just starting this journey of dealing with ED and how we can improve our intimacy and get back to enjoying the fun of sex again.  We are too young (58 and 57) to give up on sex just because of ED.  We would love to hear from other couples and men who are dealing with this issue.  We are reading a very interesting book, "Intimacy and Impotence" in which we have learned the three most important words are communicate, communicate and communicate.  We live in San Diego and would enjoy starting an ED support group for spouses who are looking for answers to their questions.  Would enjoy hearing from other couples and partners.  Steve

Steve --Patience is what I'm told -- I'm going through prostate post surgery and have had a penile implant --- Painful, but now after 5 weeks I.m beginning to see improvement  --The feeling is superb in the penis but it does show through my clothing to the point where people notice-- It's not perfect  but with a understanding partner you'll find implants have a place in treatment,  I was told with out implant I would recover from ed in 2- to - 5 years -- not acceptable  -- I had a scrotum hemotuma after surgery (everyone reacts differently )  it's improved substancialy and my pain is just about over (a bit uncomfortable but tolerable)--I feel sexual and hope to act on it soon--Your partner will be gentle and understanding and all will be fine------Dick

The two anniversary of my husband's prostate surgery just passed and ED is still a constant problem.  It has dramatically affected our sex life.  I am too young (48) and so is my husband (52) to give up on sex, but this is difficult and sometimes I want to give up.  We are considering an implant, but I hate to see him take on the risks associated with surgery.  I'd like to try therapy and see if it helps.  Any advice?

Prostate cancer really is couple's cancer.
