What are the chances of impregnation after Radical Prostatectomy

Wondering?
08/03/08

I had a radical prostaectomy for prostate cnacer about 5 years ago.  I am 80% imjpotent and am wondering about the possibility, if I overcame E.D., of impregnating a woman during sex.  This concerns me as I do not want to have children or impregnate a woman who would want to have a child and might try to do it with me as a non-suspecting man.  I do not want to be tricked into fathering a child and have been told I cannot do so.  Is this correct?

Hi Wondering,

I did some research and while I have read that prostate surgery can affect your ability to have an erection, I don't see anything that says it will make you infertile. The best person to ask is your doctor, but I think you might consider birth control until you do.

Here are a couple links to some information you might find useful. You can read what Dr Justin Harmon wrote in a journal post about prostate surgery and erectile dysfunction here. Below is an excerpt about function:

"Historically, it was believed that the full measure of a man's erectile dysfunction should not be made until one year following prostate cancer surgery. However, new literature has shed light on the fact that it may take up to two years after radical prostatectomy to regain full function. The seeming uncertainty in this recovery stems from our inability to judge or measure how and if damage to nerves occurs during the surgery."

Take care and stay in touch. Let us know how your doing!

With all likelihood you are completely infertile.  During a radical prostatectomy they remove not only the prostate, but the seminal vesicles that produce semen as well.  You may still be making sperm (depending on what therapy you've had) but there is unlikely to be any fluid to transport that sperm from your balls into your partner.  But you should check with a doctor as every person is different.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is the inability of a man to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for his or his partner's sexual needs.
