Q: Since my boyfriend has started taking meds (Enalapril and now Benecar) his sex drive is lower

And when he gets an erection he can't keep it. This seems to be a common side effect of blood pressure meds. Is there anything we can do besides taking ANOTHER drug(Viagra)? We are both very stressed out by this. Help! Thanks.

Hi Shep,

Thank you for your question. There are several options. As you mentioned, you could try adding another drug to treat the erectile dysfunction. Alternatively, your boyfriend could try another blood pressure medication. There are many classes of blood pressure medications, and many different drugs within each class. Both the beta blocker class and the diuretic class are commonly associated with impotence, so these classes should probably be avoided. This is something he should discuss with his doctor, and hopefully they can work together to find a treatment regimen that will control his blood pressure and not affect his sexual activities.

Best of luck,

Casey
