As a patient who has had penile implant surgery, I know of the difficult adjustment ALL men have following the operation and even into years afterwards. I have invented something to relieve the irritation and reduce the sensitivity. However, in determining the marketability of this product, I need to know how many implants were performed both in the U.S. and elsewhere during 2009 and the projections into the future. Past attempts to contact the major suppliers of the implants, such as American Medical Systems, have been fruitless.Any suggestions?
Looks like you can find our earnings statement online:

Hi, I work at American Medical Systems and saw your post. I'm passing this on to one of best leaders, and they will respond. I'm sorry you're frustrated, and we'll be in touch soon!
I'm still waiting to hear from American Medical Systems.
Thanks for directing me to the web site and the link, via investors, to the earnings report. Unfortunately, when I clicked onto the site, nowhere in the 115 page report was there a figure about how many implants AMS made and sold last year. The only figures given were the sales figures for the year. So I am back at the starting line....
As I said, the 2009 Annual Report says nothing about the number of implants it sold. I still need that information. Any other suggestions?
Hi. I was just looking at the internet for information on penile implants and I saw your question. I saw a site www.peritourology.com. The site states that Dr. Paul Perito, Coral Gables Florida has implanted more penile inserts than any doctor in the world. He currently implants approximately 500 every year. He has been performing this surgery since 2005. FYI, he has also invented a minimally invasive procedure just for implants which he trains other Urology surgeons to also perfrom. I hope this info is of some use to you.
Have read recently that about 1 million have been implanted since implants began as a way to help those who came back from the Vietnam War injured in that area. Now, I'm on my 3rd one since '92. Some men have undoubtedly had the same, or have died, since most men who have this procedure are middle aged or older. I was the unlucky one who had his 1st implant at 32 due to venous leakage.
Taking deaths in the last 40 years into account, as well as re-ops, you might think that 1,000,000 divided by 40 might yield the answer. However, implants are not done as much as they were before the late '90's with the use of Viagra, et al.
Would be surprised if 50,000 have been done since Viagra. Many docs know nothing about implants. Is why I have a Med alert necklace from my pharmacy on me when in public. At least when they're cutting into my abdomen to get at whatever, they'll be a little more careful- perhaps.
Look at Dr. Brian Mulcahy's site. He's the #1 expert on implants, and he flew in to the Indy VA to supervise the surgeons doing the seven of us that day in May last year. If anyone can hazard a guess regarding the number done, he can.
Am especially satisfied with this 3rd one. For the first time in my life, it is completely vertical when needed. However, after having three ops, I have virtually no feeling down there, which drives a date batty.- Charles Bevell
