Fit Or Fat: Nutrition and Exercise
Pilates -- A New Wave Of FitnessPosting Date: 04/17/2000 What Is Pilates?
We?re hearing this word "Pilates" more and more these days. But what is it? The Pilates Method (TM), although new to many of us, is far from new. Joseph H. Pilates developed this strangely appearing but remarkably functional fitness system back in 1926. He believed that most of us have imbalanced bodies because we tend to overdevelop the stronger muscle groups, which ultimately leads to poor posture and spinal misalignment.
The Pilates Method (TM) is a combination of yoga, breath work, weight training and gymnastics designed to bring the body into proper alignment. A collection of machines and/or a mat are used to accomplish proper alignment as well as improve flexibility and strength for the total body without building bulk.
Who Is Pilates Good For?
Pilates can be used by virtually anyone:
- Patients in rehab therapy: Pilates has recently been recognized by physical therapists, chiropractors and orthopedists as a method of rehabilitative body conditioning.
- Pregnant women: The Pilates Method has also been useful for pregnant women who wish to learn breathing techniques, proper body alignment, improve concentration, and recover body shape and tone after pregnancy.
- Seniors: Because of it?s emphasis on gentle movements, flexibility and balance, Pilates is a great exercise option for the older population.
Initially the apparatus may seem intimidating or unnatural, but after overcoming this first step, Pilates is a useful exercise for anyone who wants to try out something new; for people who want to round out their fitness programs; or for someone who wants to increase flexibility and strength. Although it is possible to work up a sweat doing Pilates, it is should not replace aerobic exercise.
Where Can You Find Pilates Classes?
Pilates classes are now being offered at fitness clubs as well as at the Pilates Studios that are popping up across the country. For those who choose to attempt the workout at home, there are now instructional videos and home equipment available.
Note: The Pilates Method (TM) is a trademarked name, so many studios offer a very similar class, but are not able to call it Pilates. When looking for a Pilates class, you may need to look beyond the title and talk to the instructor to learn what the class is all about.
