The First Step: Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise is one of the main elements of a well-balanced exercise program. Besides burning calories, aerobic exercise affects your whole body, raising your metabolism and making you a better butter burner!

Examples of aerobic exercise:

  • Running/jogging
  • Aerobics classes
  • Walking
  • Rowing
  • Bicycling
  • Swimming
  • Cross-country skiing
  • Water aerobics
  • Jumping rope
  • Mountain biking

When doing aerobic exercise, make sure you...

  • Use the large muscles of the thighs and buttocks.
  • Go nonstop for a minimum of 15 minutes.
  • Are breathing deeply, but are not out of breath -- that is, at 65-80 percent of your maximum heart rate. (Maximum heart rate = 220 - age)

Covert's Rules for Aerobic Exercise:

  • Go as fast as you can -- without getting out of breath!
  • Never, ever stop -- until you've exercised for at least 15 minutes.
  • The more muscle you use -- the less time you've gotta do it!
  • If you want fast results, find a 12-year-old kid -- whatever he or she does, you do!
