I was recently diagnosed with herpes. I am in the middle of an outbreak right now and at the moment I find it unbearable. The medicated cream my doctor gave me actually hurts worse than the sores themselves, and it's next to impossible to pee! Is there any way to soothe the sores, or to protect them from other "elements". I was put on valtrex yesterday and, while I don't expect a miracle, can anyone tell me how long it takes to start showing signs of improvment....anything actually at this point would be of interest to me. I'm not hungry, I avoid drinking anything and I'm constantly tired.

Hi and thanks so much for writing. My name is MK and I am the producer of this site.

I am not a health professional, so I cannot answer your questions specifically. What I can do is refer you to information we have on the site that might help.

I've searched the site for information on creams that have bad side effects (like the pain you mentioned) but I couldn't find much. If you go to our Treatment for Oral Herpes page, it mentions different types of creams available in the event you'd like to change to something else.

Also, we have a Drug Information page that talks about the dosage, side effects, etc related to Valtrex and other oral medications.

Concering you experience with the creams, I will forward your question along to one of our experts and will let you know as soon as I hear back from them.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I was recently diagnosed as well,a little over a month ago. i know exactly what you are going through.I stayed in bed for about 4 or 5 days because it was too painful to walk, especially to pee! but what i did is when you do go to the bathroom if you will take a water bottle that you can easily squeeze and when you get ready to go just squeeze the water in that area while your peeing. It makes it much less painful!

i hope that helps.
