I didnt realize oatmeal and whole wheat could trigger an outbreak. My diet consists of whole wheat foods brown rice etc. I dont want to give up these foods, they are really heally compared to bleached, processed flour. So I have decided to try lysine supplement along with foods high in Lysine and low in Arganine, and see if it helps. Is there anything else i should know that I can do to help control my outbreaks

hi i have HSV 1 and 2 i have been taking lysine for my oral HSV for almost a year and havent had an outbreak since i started, it seems to work, i take one tablet a day and if i feel like i may get an outbreak i take a few extra when i feel it.
I have only just had my first outbreak of HSV 2 which was very mild i was told, i hardly even noticed, this may be due to the fact that i have been taking lysine.
I have found with oral HSV 1, nuts are really bad so is chocolate and also sunlight. To make the blisters go away quicker i put my hairdryer on low setting and let the heat dry the blisters out a little bit every day.
I can say that i drink coffee daily, 2 cups and very strong im not sure that that has an affect on my HSV 1 or 2 but i might try and give it up and see if it helps, i will put an update on this site if and when i do so.
I have had both types of herpes for 5 years and have experimented a lot with acyclovir, lysine, avoiding certain foods, adding certain foods. I don't like being on prescriptions so I tried to manage it with proper nutrition only. I succeeded but I had to sacrifice a lot of my favorite foods: the only time I lived out-break free for 7 months straight was when I cut all caffeine, ALL sugar and sweets, and all wheat and dairy out of my diet. I was eating a macrobiotic diet. I was not taking any prescriptions or lysine supplements. I felt fantasitic, but I started to really miss certain foods. When I reintroduced sugar, chocolate, and coffee in my diet, like clockwork I had an outbreak.
I have had outbreaks on my buttocks on and off for years, but I thought it was because of allergies. It seemed every time I ate peanut butter, excessive caffeine or chocolate, I had an outbreak. I was recently diagnosed with Herpes and was put on Valtrex. I did some research and discovered the foods that aggravated the virus..Nor surprise there!! It was peanut butter, chocolate and caffeine. I recently read that excessive exercise and sunlight can aggravate the virus as well.
I am just starting a new relationship, how do/did any of you tell your partner that yu had herpes? I am absolutely devastated!!!
Hi, Did suppresive therapy eliminate your recurrent outbreaks? Or did it help reduce the number of outbreaks? If it did, could you give me an example of how it really helped? I'm 21 years old and I recently got this condition... I've had 3 severe cold sore (both upper lip and lower lip was severely affected) and genital herpes outbreaks so far in the last 4 months and its really affecting my daily life. I have to take 1 week off work everytime this happens because I work in the healthcare field and it doesnt look great in front of the patients. It takes AT LEAST 1 week for it to clear and I'm still waiting for my symptoms to get better this time... hopefully I can get back to work by Saturday but I'm pretty desperate.
Anyway, please let me know if suppresive therapy with Acyclovir or Valtrex actually works for you! I'm looking for ways to reduce these outbreaks and suppress and eliminate them if possible... thank you very much!
Take care.
I decided to change my diet too. I have trawled the internet and found most of the info you spoke about. The one thing that has worked for me is a strict diet, and I have to say, the benefits outweight the absense of artificial treats.
1. Cut out all sugar, if you need something sweet in your tea, have a spoon of honey, occassionally.
2. Eat a can of sardines in oil or water at least 4 times per week. ( you will get omega 3, Vitamin D and Calcium from this).
3. Eat live yoghurt for breakfast with some fruit.
4. cut out bread.
5. Eat dried fruit, instead of sweets.
6. Eat meat, root vegetables, rice, vegetables, salads
7. drink plenty, I have found that because I have cut out all sugar, drinking ribena in my water, has not affected me. I find it hard to drink at least 4 large glasses of water per day.
8. stay away from all processed foods.
I have stuck to this with a vengence. I take no vitamins, and I used to have outbreaks every two weeks. My pain was great. How could I turn back now. This works for me. TRY IT..........
Go vegan! I have learned first-hand and from much study that when you have a major, chronic health problem - like Herpes, half-way attempts to cure or control it with diet are ineffective. If one has a healthy immune system, one can get away with eating the animal-based Standard American Diet (SAD) and experience no major health problems - at least, not for 30 to 50 years. At some point, the body starts to break down and signs of cardiovascular and other degenerative diseases appear. Most Americans also develop metabolic syndrome or full-blown diabetes from all the refined foods they usually eat. It is a well-known fact that chronic disease and a need for daily meds is the legacy of eating the SAD way. So, at least reconsider your lifestyle! If I could cure ulcerative colitis (and other health issues) with a vegan diet and exercise and avoid taking steroids the rest of my life, and if diabetes and heart disease and many cancers can be reversed or cured with the same, why wouldn't it help with Herpes - if done right?
Diet and exercise and stress-management are the three keys to good health. Changing to a HEALTHY vegan diet, one very high in fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, seeds and nuts, has reversed and even cured the so-called "incurable" disease of diabetes, as well as cardiovascular disease and many other degenerative diseases and cancers. But, unless one goes all the way and makes a drastic change in diet, it does not work. It takes a strong immune system to prevent Herpes from breaking out - and only a diet high in fruit, veggies, WHOLE grains, seeds, legumes and nuts can build the immune system; whereas, the SAD tears it down!
Also, studies published in The Lancet and Virology science journals indicate outbreaks are related to eating a high ratio of lysine to arginine, which is found in all animal-based foods. Check out a chart of these foods at http://www.herpes.com/Nutrition.shtml. While a few plant-based foods are in the high end of that ratio, they are always relatively low in arginine and so are considered "safe" to eat for those with Herpes. Thus, a vegan diet not only gives the body large amounts of the nutrients it needs to be strong and healthy, it also contains none of the crap that is related to Herpes.
My body totally cured itself of ulcerative colitis 18 years ago by going vegan, juicing daily and power-walking 3 to 4 miles a day. Years later, after I went back to meat and dairy for a few years, I developed a suspicious mass on my breast wall that had to be watched closely with MRI's and ultra-sounds for about 3 years. To everyone's surprise but mine, it disappeared on its own - along with two bothersome cysts on my arm - within a year of switching back to a healthy-version of a vegan diet that included fresh carrot juice every day. That time, no exercise added. I took meds for the UC for just two months, only until the bleeding seemed under control. During my breast cancer scare, I also developed high blood pressure. I immediately cut out meat and refined carbs, bring it back to under 110/80 in just a few weeks. The cysts and breast mass, however, required my dropping dairy to cure them. (Read Dr. Dean Ornish's book, The Spectrum, to learn more about making wise dietary choices for your own issues.)
Just please don't expect miracles from a half-way nutritional change and then discount diet as an effective alternative to daily meds to suppress Herpes! Those daily meds may be easy to take, but they all have bad side effects long-term - and they do not cure or even totally prevent future outbreaks. Bill Clinton looked into diet last year because one of his stents was 90% blocked just a few years after surgery. He is now vegan! (Check it out on YouTube.) Those who avoid eating animal products long enough and who give their body the right nutrition otherwise all learn this is simply best for the body. It was God's original diet for our body for a good reason. So, I hope you will commit to it. Not only am I disease-free and taking no meds at Age 60, I also look and feel 20 years younger! It is a big transition, but do your best and you will succeed at it in time. Believe me, being truly healthy when young and as you age is worth the effort!
To Penelope,
i noticed you left whole wheat flour off the list. form what i read, that is allways listed as one of the top foods to avoid , as it contains high arginine... also very important to note is that Lysine should contain no gelatin.. most lysine is encapsulated in gelatin .. & i found one that isnt .. it is the brand "solgar" it is called free form Lysine suitable for vegetarinans , hence it contains no gelatin

I was on 1000 mg daily of Valtrex and was tired of all the chemicals in my body, so, I lowered to 500mg daily and it's worked fine. Of course, my internist knows I lowered the dose. Just recently I got concerned about taking 6 prescription drugs and wanted to come off some of them...It seems one is causing a problem that I have to take another pill...So, I decided I would go on 500mg every other day along with L'lysine...today at my nutritionist, she said that it wouldn't work alone well, so, she added Olivir, which is olive leaf..I'm to take 2-twice a day along with the L'lysine....Whamo, I have an outbreak tonight..grrrrr!!! it breaks out on my lower back. Anyone else uses Olivir? I'm wondering if I need to go back on Valtrex a few days to clear this up....decisions, decisions...actually, my nutritionist said that Valtrex is not "that bad"..the others I'm coming off are much worse..Cymbalta, Actonel, Aciphex and Crestor..many of those cause multiple problems, even bone loss...maybe I'm stressing my body too much and that caused the outbreak...who know?
thanks,RT
Check out a vegan diet carefully. This virus you have is no worse than having other so-called "incurable" diseases like diabetes, ulcerative colitis, heart disease, lupus. Yet, they are all curable with a healthy (no refined grains or sugar, lots of whole fruits and veggies, seeds, nuts and legumes) vegan diet!
18 years ago, I was told I had to take Prednisone (sp) the rest of MY life to control ulcerative colitis that looked like it was turning into Crohn's disease. It made me feel so depressed, so I looked for alternatives. I took it until my bleeding was well under control (about 2 months) and told my doctor I was going to treat it with diet by going vegan. (I was already a vegetarian, but ate a LOT of cheese.) He was soooo upset at me, saying "Diet has nothing to do with it. It is INCURABLE!" Well, he was wrong. I started juicing carrots daily, taking lots of antioxidant supplements, exercising daily, and ate no processed foods -just good plant-based food. No steroids - with all the bad side effects; just good food and exercise. 3 years later, a second colonoscopy showed no sign of the disease. 18 years and a third colonoscopy later, still no sign of it. :) Will it ever come back? Probably, but only if I go back to eating the wrong way again, because diet had EVERYTHING to do with it!
Many now believe that the Standard American Diet (SAD) and lack of exercise are responsible for probably 80% of the disease in this country. If I had listened to my doctor's advice and not done my own research into diet, I would not be in the prime health I am in today at Age 60. I look and feel like 40, have no disease, and take no meds! We have to take responsibility for our own health and not depend so heavily upon doctors and main-stream specialists for all our health advice. They often don't keep up with the latest. Bill Clinton learned this the hard way. Check out his CBS interview on YouTube and learn why he is now vegan.
A good book written by a highly respected physician is The Spectrum. No one seriously questions the results of Dr. Dean Ornish's large clinical studies on diet and disease. Even better, check out the video documentary, Processed People. Just bought 3 copies to share with friends and family.
The fact is that doctors do not learn to cure anything and are taught that 80% of disease has "no cause". Ridiculous! They use meds to treat disease and patients do not usually get better; they just get worse over time, just more slowly. In the meantime, these doctors are living a good life off of us having all kinds of diseases - plus the need to treat the side effects of meds prescribed to treat the original disease.
I really encourage you to go vegan and take extra supplements like antioxidants and EFA's if you want to control Herpes with out taking meds all your life. Not only does a balanced vegan diet provide the body with all it needs to rebuild and maintain a strong immune system to prevent outbreaks, it does not contain any of the bad foods that are related to Herpes outbreaks. These are those animal-based foods that all have high ratios of lysine to arginine along with high amounts of arginine. (Some plant-based foods have high ratios, too, but the arginine levels are very low and considered not harmful.) This is the same advice I am giving to my daughter, who seems to have contracted Herpes. Best health!
