Oral Herpes, Genital Herpes, and Celebrities (Oh My!)

There has been a lot of herpes talk in the media lately (and by “media” I mean gossip blogs and trashy online magazines) due to the recent allegations that R&B singer Chris Brown beat up his former girlfriend, pop singer Rihanna. The incident reportedly took place after a pre-Grammy...

It would be nice if more people understand herpes.  I have HSV 1 on my genitals but when you explain it to people that you have cold sores on you vajaja they think it is something totally different.  It's funny, I have friends who get cold sores on their mouth, but they still think it is different then the one I have.  This is where you see such a lack in education.  There is no difference and like Penelope wrote, it doesn't matter which strain you cary you can give it to someone on their privates if you have it on you mounth and you can get it on you mouth from someones privates.  Celebrities are human and they get hepes too!!!!

Since when can you get oral herpes from saliva?  Oral to oral transmission occurs during an outbreak/coldsore or during viral shedding (without symptoms on the skin) not saliva.  The virus is transmitted from skin to skin contact not saliva.

Hi Manhattan,

Thanks for your feedback.

Though the risk of transmission is highest with skin-to-sore contact, the herpes virus can also be carried in bodily fluids (such as saliva and semen).  It may be rare, but it is possible to contract herpes from direct exposure to saliva, not just with sores or skin.  You can find more information about this by going to our Transmission page, in which it states: "...because HSV-1 can be passed in saliva, people should also avoid sharing toothbrushes or eating utensils with an infected person."  I would say this advice is for when the infected person is having an outbreak.  Otherwise, since HSV-1 is very common, it's not something that needs to be obsessed over.

When a person contracts a STD, it doesn't matter rather or not it is not fatal, or harmless. What matters is that someone gave you a friggin STD!

Hollywood, and the music industry is totally different from what we consider "normal". I guess that's why many refer to Hollywood as " LA LA Land"; because their morals, & how they approach relationships are totally different from how we would approach them.

Marriages are not marriages, but they are business transactions: Most relationships in the entertainment industry, are publicity stunts. And this is what I consider Jay Z, & Beyonce's marriage. They are considered a "power couple", because of the impact they have on the entertainment world!

Jay Z was the former president/CEO of Def Jam. He took over from the same person who discovered some of the most noted names in the history of Hip Hop(Russell Simmons). And he is part owner of an NBA team. He discovered Rihanna, who is considered one of the hottest, and most talented pop stars, next to his wife! He is a very powerful person in the music industry.

His wife is considered one of the sexiest, and most sought after women in the entire entertainment world. If she is not getting MTV awards, and Grammys, she is getting major movie deals. She(Beyonce') has been a household name, for almost a decade. She is considered the fantasy of many men; and many women try to emulate her beauty, to make themselves more appealing. They wear what she wears(clothes, beauty products)etc. She can sell products, because most women, know how men see her.

So, with that being said, I would guess, that Chris Brown is just collateral damage, in the whole Rihanna/Jay Z/Beyonce' issue!

Considering if it is true, that Jay slept with Rihanna, & gave her an STD(herpes); & she then gave it to Chris Brown. That would raise suspicion on rather or not Beyonce' has also contracted it from Jay Z(considering the fact that they are married). Sex sells...And if it is true, the sex appeal of both Beyonce' & Rihanna, will diminish; causing also their star power to diminish.

No one wants to buy a product(cosmetics, hair care, clothing), see a movie, or go to a concert of a person who has herpes: An noticeable, and uncurable disease!

And no one wants to shake hands with a business man, who is suspected to have herpes(Jay Z)!

I hope you never get a std, chances are pretty high that anyone could. There are alot of people that have no idea they have it, since they have no symptom's.

The number of people that have oral or genital herpes is out of control.

Plus, for your info, you could have been with a person 15 years ago and gotten it, this info came from my GYN.

I got mine after coming out of a 25 year marriage, I was not up to date on safe sex. One of my partners gave it to me. Either he knew or did not know. I have genitial herpes, with no symptoms. My GYN thought after my examination, I was clean. Then a blood test disagreeded. I am a carrier, I do not have outbreaks.

Most guys have been ok that I have it because I practice truth - I tell them - they appreciate the honesty.

I take valtex if I am going to get active for 2 weeks, and everyday after that. I would use a female condom.

Also instead of the guy wearing a condom where he is exposed at the top.

If foreplay happens, you use a dental dam. For him, I would insist he use a flavored condom.

So there would be 1 percent chance of him getting it.

Here's a question for you, have you ever heard of a female condom? It is the only way a man is fully protected, remember your condom does not completely protect you. With a female condom, the entrance for the women is covered and so are you. Plus, taking Valtrex once a day. The chance of getting a disease is 1 percent.

Also, the women can still get pleasure by putting on a dental dam that is flavored. The man cannot catch anything that way if performing foreplay.

If you really care, both should show the other the results of their last tests after seeing a gyn or a regular doctor for a man.
