Pain and tingling with no outbreak?

Tonton Community Member January 26, 2008
  • I was visually diagnosed with herpes (probably type 2) 11 years ago.  The swab was contaminated and was the only swab left at either hosptial in my city, so I've never had an actual positive result.  I have never had another outbreak in 11 years, but often experience tenderness, itchiness and sharp, stabbing pains in my genital area, but on the left side only.  Recently, I have begun having this stabbing pain on the left side of my vulva, along with aching, throbbing pain in my left arm, shoulder, hip, legs etc. right down into my foot along with severe headaches, and sharp, stabbing pains in my stomach (similar to menstrual cramps-in the same area, only with stabbing pain along with the cramping).  These symptoms are especially severe when I'm menstruating (which has only recently re-started after being on Depo-Provera for almost 10 years which stopped my menstrual periods).

I'm just wondering if this is typical, if anyone else has had a similar experience or symptoms or if this could be something other than herpes simplex.  Since I've never had another outbreak, I've never had the opportunity to be retested, so I'm not sure what is going on.  This pain is becoming more frequent and almost debilitating some days, which affects my sex life as well as my work life.  Any advice or similar experiences would be helpful.

Hi I just wanted to say I'm a 19 year old female and I contracted the herpes virus and know what you're going through. I was with the same guy for 3 years and about 6 months ago I got blisters on my legs and finger. I went to so many doctors that told me it's DEFINITELY not herpes because it wasn't on my genitals. BS. I can imagine this happens a lot and most doctors are utterly clueless about herpes. I'm a pre med student and have spoken to a number of lab researchers regarding these viruses. It's just that so many people know very little about them and they present themselves differently in each individual. One thing is that if you have a genetic predisposition for autoimmune disorders, you're more likely to have worse symptoms of herpes and the virus will make those other disorders worse. ie rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, etc.

This is what happened to me as my body responded to the virus. Since my mother has RA among many other autoimmune disorders, this basically messed up my body. Now I have RA symptoms in my fingers (I also got primary outbreak herpetic whitlow of the finger) as well as my knees and ankles. 6 months ago I did not. I have lower back pain every month, whereas before I never had this feeling---only way I can describe it is in extremely cold and dry air at times my back would have similar achey, constant pain. I also get stabbing pain in my clitoris which at times I feel is almost unbearable and this extremely odd and very very uncomfortable twitching in my clitoris and abdomen that will not stop--just with time. I also get these same muscle/nerve convulsions in my legs and buttocks. I get pain in my buttocks that I have never experienced before, as well as shotting pain going down the length of my leg and arm. I also get an intense and extremely uncomfortable pressure? type of feeling in my abdomen and clitoris. I notice it when it comes and it stays constantly for weeks. I didn't normally et headaches and now I get similar to my mother's migraines regularly. My lymph nodes swell every month and i also have a very copious amount of vaginal discharge..which stumped doctors because I had no infection. It's regular, clear has no smell but it's constant and lots of it. I also have a higher frequency of urination and it doesn't so much hurt as it feels it's a little blocked. I get stabbing pains in my low abdomen which then turn to dull aches that seem to get no response from ibuprofen.  I don't sleep either near as well as I used to. I don't have an appetite either and my body uses much of the caloric intake on fighting the virus. I feel almost constant malaise and fatigue. Initial outbreak was the worst and I could not go to work or school. I'm 19 and literally within a 6 month span have gone from very healthy to sick and weak. I'm not a complainer and usually avoid doctors and medicine like the plague and in these months have been to countless doctors because most had no idea what it was and kept saying it wasn't herpes but no one knew what it was. Some had the audacity to say these were psychosomatic. Knowing myself and my personality and how my body felt before this I knew better than to think such a thing.

All I can say is I'm glad I had a university to ask people about these things. Remember medical doctors are not specially trained to deal with herpes and they are taught to not think of it as a big deal, per se, and to look for common "cookie cutter" symptoms. There is not a lot of information out there about these viruses.

My advice is to see if a university around you has anyone specialzing in studies of the herpees virus and talk with them: most times they have immensely greater knowledge about the virus than a typical GP, OB/Gyn, neurologist, dermatologist, urologist and even infectious disease specialists.

Main thing to remember about the herpes virus is it lays dormant in the nerve ganglia and travel along the nerves--to think there is no damage or no effect on these areas is a bit ignorant. It's just that many people think they KNOW things about this virus and dismiss what they do not already believe. I've spoken to many people who know nothing about the virus, including doctors. ( I saw 11. 11 different doctors all of which told me nope no herpes. I had to wait 6 months before my blood count showed positive result, as I got tested 3 times. Imagine how often this happens and herpes is misdiagnosed? If I was not so persistant I would still be wondering what this is. I'm extremely upset that this seems to happen more times than not.)

I hope this helps. You're not alone and these symptoms unfortunately are very real and there are many studies being done about the virus and how it wreaks havoc on the body. I never thought I'd get this, believe me. I'm havin a difficult time dealing with it but I understand so please feel free to leave a reply

I would consider changing laboratories if they are using contaminated items on you.

Also you don't need to get tested with a swab when you get an outbreak.

A blood sample will tell if your body has the antibodies for HSV and then you will know and get that out of the way, even if you never get another outbreak.

    If you're getting sharp pains...

If you're getting sharp pains or cramps you should see a doctor cause its not because of herpes which will only hurt when you have an open outbreak or tingling where you'll get it, I've had it for 5 years.

I divorced the tramp have custody of my last remaining minor daughter etc.. but the hate and anger continue. I was tested and she was not. She knew she had it she later admitted but it was too late for me. Now I have the feeling that basically my life is over so far as ever meeting someone and actually getting into a normal "healthy" relationship. I have dated but have chosen to abstain from sexual contact with anyone. Now my ex is running like the tramp she is and when I see her with her latest victim I just smile. The new Typhoid Mary I call her. What it all boils down to is that I don't think that in this day and age you can tell anyone anything about you and expect an adult response especially that you have Herpes. I'm 43 and I think I'll probably grow old alone wondering how I could have changed it all. It's ashame that more young  people don't look around them and see how devastating their actions can be on their future. Me? Well I guess I'm just one of the "Lucky" old guys who was married to a well versed "TRAMP"!

Maybe she's a whore, ok, but to assume it's from some guy she cheated with isn't necessarily so.

Over 75% of sexually active adults have herpes.  Wow, that's a big number and many don't have a clue because, like me, they never had an outbreak.

Move on, you'll meet someone.... when you forgive her and get over it.

She probably cheated for a reason... your marriage wasn't working big deal... move on.

Later on a follow up, a nurse made a comment about it looking like genital herpes. I had never experienced any pain, even when the nurse was touching it with latex gloves, I did not experience pain.

I was not aware that i could possible have herpes, and had not been taking the proper steps to ensure it doesn't spread to other parts of my body at first. I am feeling tingling, and random skin abnormalities, maybe I am just freaking out but i think i have contracted this virus.  Judging from what i've wrote, do you all believe i have contracted hvs-2?

Also, these symptoms seem to come with a general malaise and depression not normal for me....

Would love to hear some thoughts

You will be OK, my dear.

I was diagnosed on my birthday this summer! Bummer.

Personally, I don't think it is any of my family's business...would just upset them and they attach a stigma...

Truly, it's no ones business except for you and whoever you have sex with. It's hard the first time to share such a thing (as it is important you share it BEFORE...

I was really depressed and ashamed...so I told a couple of my closest friends...one of them had it too, and the other one had a partner with it! Neither had every told me!

I got braver, told another close friend....as it turned out...lot's of people I know either had hsv 1 or 2... then, I went and did herpes online dating (personally, i think all online dating sucks, but this one was the best)....

I finally met so many normal people with it, that I felt better.

Stress and immune function are very important in the management of this virus...please release your shame, you are in good company.

I believe that the sharp stabbing pain has to do with the virus being in our nerves.

Please check out our Symptoms page, which addresses vaginal pain in addition to visual symptoms of herpes. If what you see on this page doesn't confirm for you that you have herpes, check out Dr. Charlotts Grayson's blogs Is It Herpes, Or Another STD? an Is It Herpes, Or Something Else?

These posts describe the symptoms of other STDs and non-sexually transmitted diseases.

Of course, seeing a doctor is never a bad idea, especially if you keep having these pains!

    I hope this helps,
