I started dating someone about 6 months ago.  He told me he had herpes before we had sex.  I know it was terribly hard for him and he doesn't ever want to bring it up.  I, unfortunately, am allergic to latex and although we were using (notice the past tense) non-latex condoms (not the sheepskin kind, dear me), they break often.  He takes Valtrex daily and hasn't had a break-out in years.  I have been tested twice (just last week), and three months ago, and both times they have come back negative.  I did get coldsores when I was in elementary school, but have only had one since then.  Anyway, my question is by having unprotected sex, with no signs of breakouts or otherwise, and the use of valtrex, how much of a risk am I actually putting myself at?  I know research states that up to 70% of herpes contractions ocurred where there were no signs, but I am not sure of the reduction with valtrex.  Should I revert back to hypoallergenic condoms and the like?  Also, I am pretty sure that we'll eventually get married and I have no desire to have children.  Will my life end if I do contract it?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  And also...where's the spellcheck??

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
