Thank you so much for writing. My name is MK and I am the producer for herpesconnection. I am not a certified health professional, so I cannot answer your questions specifically. However, I can forward you to some information on our site that might help.

Dr. Charlotte Grayson's post What Are the Symptoms of Herpes and When Should You Expect Them? details initial outbreak symptoms (it also says that sometimes, you may not have an outbreak at all). She also states that you can infect a person with herpes even if you don't have an outbreak.

I am going to ask one of our experts to write a post on the difference between signs of HSV in the blood and an actual herpes infection (ie does herpes exposure mean you have herpes?)

As soon as I get a response from them, I will let you know.

In addition to the post I linked to above, check out our Dating and Relationships page- it talks about how to talk to people about the virus, how to deal when your partner is diagnosed, and the like.

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
