dormancy of herpes

I have a friend who has a new diagnosis of herpes. The problem is she has been married for 20 years and had only been with her husband her 3 or 4 years before that. he is trying to convince her that he has been faithful and that it must have been dormant in one or both of them all these years. is that possible ? i really want her to protect herself and have all the information she needs to make wise choices about her life.
