Herpes? Please hELP!

By arielle Saturday, January 12, 2008
I am a 21 year old brown skinned male and i am really hoping you could help me get a better understanding about my own fears. I am uncircumcised and have had unprotected sex thrice with the same partner over the past 3 years. She is the only sexual partner i have had to date. I do know that she has had sex with other individuals before i slept with her. The first time we had intercourse was in January 2006 and as far as i know i showed no symptoms of herpes. The next time we had intercourse was in September of 2006 and i still believe i showed no symptoms. However, during spring of 2007 (around March,April) i developed some rashes/blisters primarily on my abdominal area and on my torso(some even on my upper torso over my ribs). I don't recall any blisters or lesions on my penis and genitals even though i think there was mild reddening above my penis - where the pubic hair grows . After i did some reading i somewhat believed (and still do) that it was a case of Pityriasis Rosea. This is because i didn't develop any painful blisters on my genitals and also because it has left some very mild scarring on my abdomen and my pelvis - they are hardly noticeable but present. I also heard Pityriasis Rosea generally affects people during the spring time and tends to leave mild scarring sometimes on darker skinned individuals. I think these blisters lasted for about 1-2 months. The third time we had intercourse and oral sex was in June of 2007 and since then i believe i haven't showed any symptoms either. I haven't had a re-occurrence of that rash ever since but i am still unsure as to whether i am infected with herpes or not. Does herpes always show up on the genital areas or is it possible that it appears only on the lower-abdomen and torso? There have been times i have felt slight tingling in some areas but i think it has more do to with my paranoia. I haven't had any STD testing done as yet but i am interested in your opinion before i do go in for testing. Do you also know how much herpes testing costs in the United States?

Thanks a lot for your time! I appreciate it.

Hello and thanks for your questions. I am not a trained healthcare professional, so I cannot answer you question specifically. What I can do is refer to you information on this site that might help you determine whether or not you are herpes positive or negative.

First and foremost, it is important to use a condom at all times during sexual intercourse. It is an easy way to protect yourself from getting an unwanted STD. Getting tested for STD's if you haven't used a condom when having sex is a good idea, for precautionary measures.

To learn more about herpes symptoms - check out our symptoms page. If you don't find what you're looking for here, let me know and I'll try to help you furthur.

Thanks
