It was 2 French researchers who discovered the AIDs virus and thanks to them we had a name for a disease that now has more than 33 million people world-wide as carriers (of HIV) and treatments.
A German scientist was honored for showing that the human papilloma virus (HPV) caused cervical cancer. HPV causes genital warts which in turn can cause more than 500,000 cases of cervical cancer yearly. HPV-16 aand HPV-18 are specifically implicated as being responsible for 70% of those cases.
These scientists/researchers were specifically honored because never before have "science and medicine been so quick to discover, identify origin and provide treatment for a new disease entity."
The prizes (substantial monetary as well as the honor) will be awarded in Stockholm this year.
