HSV1 and oral sex

By gll Wednesday, November 07, 2007
I contracted HSV from my husband who was a diabetic and always had cold sores when he was sick.  I was a virgin and had never been with anyone else.  I didn't have symptoms until I was pregnant with my 3rd child.  At that time I had a massive outbreak in my mouth, the roof of my mouth and throat and lip were covered.  My OB/GYN started doing pap smears and said that herpes was present in the birth canal, even though I had no blisters in the genital area.  I had to have two negative results in order for natural childbirth to occur.  I got two negatives and then a positive happened again and I was 3 weeks past my due date so a c-section was done.  I was never told weather it was HSV1 or 2 I was told that there is no differentiation betwee HSV 1 and 2.  That was 22 years ago.  I am still having outbreaks of HSV on my lip and usually always in the same spot.  I have a new partner and recently I performed oral sex on him on Tuesday and there was a lot of intimate kissing.  On Sunday morning I noticed the old tingling feeling starting on my lower lip followed by blisters on Monday.  I am concerned that even though there were no blisters present at this time and he wore a condom during intercourse that I exposed him to HSV 1 through either oral sex on his genitals or his mouth by kissing.  I am now afraid to kiss anyone or give oral sex because you never know when the viral shedding thing is going on.  I have been to the doctor since and started on Valtrex.  Please help me with my options

Herpes is most easily spread when blisters or sores can be seen on the infected person. But it can be spread at any time, even when there aren't any symptoms.

For more tips, i recoommend you can go to a herpes community to check: http://www.stdpal.com
