Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) in Older Adults

By Charlotte Grayson, M.D., Health Pro Monday, September 08, 2008
Age offers no protection against STDs. You only have to look to a recent survey from Britain that shows that the numbers of STDs in people over 50 has doubled in the past decade. In the study, nearly half of the STD cases were genital warts, which is caused by certain forms of human papilloma virus (H...

I am a registered nurse, currently working on two advanced degrees. A recent assignment had us doing a "community assessment" and I chose The Villages in Central Florida. The residents of this micropolis must be 55 or older. There are 37 golf courses... Thirty-seven! It has been called "Disney Land for Retirees." These people are amazing! They are active, happy, outgoing people who are truly seizing every moment. In addition to the standard demographics and basic information, I was very surprised to learn that The Villages has the fastest-growing percentage of STI's and HIV/AIDS in the entire state of Florida. *THAT* is astounding. It does prove, though, that their lifestyles are, inded, active.

I just recently found out I have Herpes type 2. I am 46 and have been with my husband for 13 yrs. Needless to say, very shock to find out about this, but even more shock to find out that, more and more, older women are being diagnosed with this. I had no idea I had herpes and went to doctor with a vaginal infection. I had no rash and no outward signs (except discharge), every problem was inside, ie. pain, tingling, and discomfort having sex. My OB/GYN told me that this was common and that I could have had it for yrs. without even knowing. I was very upset, depressed, and felt ashamed. My husband, thank goodness, was understanding and supportive. But I can't, won't, discuss this with anyone else! I feel that the doctors and nurses treat this like "another day in the office" and tell me not to worry, not much comfort. What I don't understand is why if this is so "common" why is there not more testing done and more info out there. This totally blindsided me.  I live in rural TN so there is limited access to everything, so I was wondering if there are any support group type websites you could recommend? Most sites seem to deal with the dating scene which is not of interest to me. Any info or advice would be great.
