Is the new double dose of Famvir the best way to go instead of Valtrex? How should it be taken?

Last year, the FDA approved a new regimen for treatment of genital herpes outbreaks in people with healthy immune systems that consists of 1000 mg of Famvir twice daily for one day at the first sign of an outbreak. They key is timing. The shortened regimen is only recommended if symptoms of an outbreak - tingling, burning or sores -- have occurred 6 hours before starting treatment.

Talk to your doctor to determine if this regimen is right for you.
