I recently had a routine visit with my gynecologist who suggested routine screening for STDs due to my single status and sexual activity.
7-10 days prior to this testing, I had two oral cold sores. One on the lip and one inside my cheek.
All testing came out negative; however, the HSV-1 test came out positive. IGG antibody test > 5.
My healthcare provider is insisting I have genital herpes (from oral sex); however, I have no signs of genital infection. I realize that it is really a societal difference (oral vs. genital) but I am intelligent enough to know that the IGG antibody testing was not genital specific.
She is recommending that I take prophylaxis daily to prevent transmission. I'm unsure if this is necessary since > 50% of people have HSV-1 orally.
