My wife and I have been together for over 8 years (dating 2, married 6). In that time, she has never had an outbreak of genital herpes. She went on a girls weekend and about 10-12 days after getting back from that she broke out with herpes (it's been diagnosed by an MD). She says that she got it from a boyfriend and just never told me about it. She last saw this person over 10 years ago. She says that she had one outbreak about 10 years ago and has not had one since. Can this really be true?

Hi, my name is Camilo Molina and I am monitoring this sharepost community. First of all, let me thank you for posting in our community and allowing other members to relate to your concerns. I must also tell you that I am not a certified healthcare practitioner and thus cannot provide you with any definitive professional advice. I can however, direct you to some helpful parts of our website that may help answer your questions. It seems that your main concern is whether the virus can remain dormant for such a long period of time in order to assure yourself that your wife was not unfaithful during her girls' weekend. To answer this you should be asking yourself two questions. What is the minimum amount of time between infection and the first outbreak?--to see if that minimum requirement is met in respect to when your wife experienced her outbreak in a time context of when she went on her girls weekend. The second question, the question you asked, is can the viral infection remain asymptomatic for 10+ years. In order to answer these questions you should read the following article by our featured expert Dr. Grayson--What are the symptoms of herpes and when should I expect them? Next I think you should read the following article about What to do when you're partner is diagnosed. This article will provide some suggestions on how to move on safely and constructively with your relationship. I hope this was of some help and feel free to post any other questions. Also don't forget to consult your physician before adopting any new knowledge into practice!
