How long can Herpes go undiagnosed?

By doodle Friday, September 21, 2007
My spouse of over 30 years has recently been diagnosed wit herpes. I do not have the virus, and am convinced she has been faithful. She has had no symptoms (that I'm aware of) our entire marriage. Is it possible for the virus to go undiagnosed and present no symptoms for over 30 years?

Hi and thanks for writing. My name is MK and I am the producer for this site.

While I am not a health professional, and therefore can't answer your question specifically, I can refer you to a post written by our expert Dr. Charlotte Grayson, titled What To Do When Your Partner Is Diagnosed. In this post, Dr. Grayson answers questions about your relationship itself, as well as the science behind herpes and its transmission and dormancy.

You can also check out Dr. Grayson's blog titled Why Am I Having More Frequent Outbreaks? If your partner is just now breaking out, there could be something that is triggering it.

I hope this helps. Again, thanks for writing.

I had been married for 10 years w/no signs of herpes.  I've been divorced now 5 years and have not had any sexual activity (sadly) since.  Just recently I've experienced an outbreak of what I believe is genital herpes on my pubic area and inner thigh.  I'm shocked that after all these years of never having any symptoms to all of a sudden have a breakout.  I have not yet been professionally diagnosed.

It is not very sure. Maybe you can get some advice on a herpes support site named http://www.stdpal.com. The most of the couples on this site can manage it successfully. Sorry, i am new to this, so I can't do more help. Good luck

I am living with herpes for 8 years old and become a member of herpes dating site http://herpesmates.com/.

at first I would only date people that already had it, but now I have the courage to have 'The Talk' and have been very successful, all of this has been because of the support and friendship I received from the site and still continue to receive. The stigma itself is FAR FAR worse than the disease itself, its just a minor skin condition...
