My ex recently found out she has the HSV-2 Virus. Can you tell for how long?

My ex and I are still great friends, very close, and she has genital herpes. We thought she had something going on wrong when we first got together,I had asked her multiple times to go get tested, but she wouldn't go. How should I respond if I have it too? We don't even know how long she's had...
