Hi Tom,

Thanks for your question.  Though I'm not a doctor, and cannot give medical advice, I do have herpes and I think I can answer your questions.

The risk of your new interest having herpes is a function of many things, like how often she used protection with her boyfriend, how often he had outbreaks, whether he was on medication, etc.  If they knew the whole time that he had it, chances are they were safer than if he found out after.  I don't know the whole story, so I'm sure the risk of her being a carrier is just as high as any other sexually active person.

Yes, she can be tested.  There are many ways to get it done.  I had a blood test, in which they look not for herpes but for herpes antibodies.  You can find more about different testing methods in HealthGal's post The Truth, the Whole Truth and...

I also recommend you check out Herpes Causes and Risk Factors as well as Genital Herpes Prevention.

Hope that helps!

PJ

There are two types of HSV, HSV type 1 and 2, and both can cause genital herpes.
