I have no symptoms of Herpes ever. Can you still have herpes for years and not know?

I had a sexual partner tell me I gave him herpes. I have never had any signs of the virus. I broke our relationship off and he was very mad. I figured he was making it up to get me back for breaking up with him. Now I am scared he might have already had it. So can I have herpes but not have signs?...
