Q: Can we have unprotected sex?

I have herpes 1 (maybe 1 oral outbreak per year) and my wife contracted herpes 1 (genital and oral) when we had oral sex (her resistance was down after a surgery).  We are careful not to have sex when any outbreaks are evident, but my question is, can I still get genital herpes from her?  We're not really excited about the idea of using protection forever!?  It's really put a damper on our sex life.

Hi Concerned Husband,

I had the same question the first couple of days I found out about my "gift". You can still get HSV on your gentiles if she's not taking medicine to prevent her outbreaks because we shed skin and the infected area could shed on the genitals. If she's taking medicine I wouldn't be concerned. If she missed a day of her medicine don't do it, my doctor said you should treat the HSV medicine like birth control pills. If you miss a day you could get an OB and spread it. My husband and I have unprotected sex but we both take Acyclovir; I have HSV2 and he has HSV1.
