Dear Shelly,

Thank you so much for your question. While it certainly sounds like your friend could have genital herpes, it's impossible to know for sure without seeing a doctor. I highly suggest that your friend make an appointment with her doctor ASAP. In the meantime, I will try my best to help you learn more about genital herpes.

First, I think you'll find it very helpful to read "Genital Herpes: The Basics."

You can learn more about the symptoms, treatment and prevention of genital herpes here.

You may also find it helpful to read Dr. Charlotte Grayson's article "Should you be tested for genital herpes?"

Finally, while there is no guaranteed method of preventing the recurrence of herpes outbreaks, here are some tips to help relieve pain and discomfort. Read Ten Ways to Manage Your Symptoms and Relieve Discomfort.

I hope I was of help, please continue to post with any other questions you may have.
