Q: Have herpes for over 20 years, & haven't had an outbreak for 8 years. Can I still infect anyone?

My husband gave me herpes 20 years ago.  At first I had several outbreaks a year, then just a few, and now it has been over 8 years since I have had an outbreak.  Now that my marital status has changed, I was wondering if I could still infect someone?  I know that I will always have this disease, but wouldn't it be considered to be in remission?  If not, I know that I was considered safe to deliver my babies, because there was not any outbreaks, so wouldn't now be the same as to when I was in labor?  Or will I always be considered to be damaged goods?
