Do you know which type of HSV is causing your outbreaks? Commonly HSV1 causes oral outbreaks and recurrent OBs can be triggered by sunlight. If this is the case, perhaps covering the area when in sunlight may help?   You could also try topical over-the-counter creams to help clear up the OB and if you are aware of that pre-OB tingling sensation you can start applying them before the OB actually appears.   There are several antiviral drugs available which have been proven to reduce OB recurrences and severity. You could try any one of these and see how that goes.
